Sleep apnea affects 5-10% of adults in the United States, though a majority of sufferers go undiagnosed. Potentially dangerous symptoms, such as snoring , are often overlooked.
Sleep Apnea is a potentially life-threatening condition that usually occurs when a constriction in the upper respiratory tract blocks the passage of air during sleep. People with sleep apnea may stop breathing for up to a minute at a time, as frequently as several hundred times during the night. The result is disrupted, restless sleep and a reduced intake of oxygen. These interruptions, called apneas, are caused by the collapse of soft tissue in the airway, which prevents oxygen from reaching the lungs.
Weak muscles in the airway, a large tongue, obesity, and other factors may cause airway tissue to collapse and obstruct breathing.
