Searching “sleep center near me” in South Florida brings up plenty of options. But not every sleep center offers the same level of care. If you’re about to book a sleep study, here are six things worth checking first.
1. Board-certified sleep physicians
Your sleep study produces hundreds of pages of data. The person interpreting it should be a physician trained in sleep medicine. Ask who reads the studies and whether they’re board certified.
2. Experienced, registered technologists
The technologist who sets up your sensors and monitors you overnight has a big impact on the quality of your study. Look for a center staffed by credentialed sleep technologists who can make you comfortable and troubleshoot problems during the night.
3. Both in-lab and home testing
Some people are great candidates for a home sleep test. Others need a full in-lab sleep study, especially if a condition other than sleep apnea is suspected. A center that offers both can match the test to your needs instead of the other way around. Not sure which you need? Our guide to home sleep tests vs. in-lab sleep studies explains the difference.
4. A comfortable, private setting
You’ll sleep better in a quiet, private room than in a busy hospital ward. Ask what the rooms are like and whether you can bring your own pillow or follow your normal bedtime routine.
5. Help with insurance
A good sleep center will verify your coverage before your study and tell you about any costs upfront. Ask whether they work with your plan and handle prior authorization if it’s required.
6. Treatment and follow-up, not just a test
A diagnosis is only the first step. The best results come when the same team helps you start treatment, adjust it and stick with it. Ask whether the center provides treatment such as PAP therapy, supplies and ongoing support, or whether you’ll be sent elsewhere after your results.
